Men Wearing Nail Polish | Mani Is A New Trend

In 2016, Marc Jacobs started putting the "man" back in manicure with a new hashtag he created, #MalePolish. If you've followed the talented designer on Instagram, you've probably noticed that he's been posting some glamorous nails almost weekly.

In an interview with Vogue two years ago, A$AP Rocky said, "I think men should be able to do nail art without feeling feminine." Pretty obvi, men's nail manicure is having a moment.

Male Manicure In The Past

It is worth noting that the concept of painting colors on men's nails is not a brand-new one. In fact, male manicures were typical in ancient times. In Babylonian times, most men wore nail polish, with darker colors signifying higher social classes. Similarly, nail polish was worn by people of all styles and genders in ancient Egypt. In the case of Egypt, red represented a higher social status.

Men's Nail Polish At The Moment

In recent decades, men's nail polish has been chiefly associated with subcultural styles such as glam rock in the 70s and 80s (David Bowie), alternative rock in the 90s (Kurt Cobain's red nails), and Gothic culture.

The difference now is that men's nail polish is becoming more mainstream rather than counter-cultural. In other words, nail care is about aesthetics and personal expression, not arbitrary gender-biased commentary. With the trend of nail care for men prevalent, it may be time to deepen men's knowledge of nail manicure products.
