Impact of Air Travel on Tourism in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a small, developing country located in South Asia, with a population of 164 million people. Since its independence from Britain in 1971, the country has made tremendous progress in both its economic and social development. It has become one of the most populous countries in the world and is currently regarded as a “Middle Income Country”.

In recent years, Bangladesh has also witnessed a surge in tourism, largely thanks to the improved air travel links now established with other countries. In this article, we look at the impact air travel has had on tourism in Bangladesh, as well as the potential future of sustainable tourism in the country.

Air Travel

Air travel has enabled people to visit far-off places with ease. As a result, many more visitors now come to Bangladesh for leisure and business purposes. Moreover, air travel has eliminated the need to trek or take a bus or train, allowing tourists to travel from one part of the country to another quite quickly.

International air travel to Bangladesh has increased by a third since 2009. In 2009, there were only 774,392 international visitors to Bangladesh, but this figure had risen almost 40 percent to 1,411,675 by 2018. Bangladesh currently offers international flights to 29 destinations in 18 different countries, operated by various airlines.

In addition to this, three new international airports have been built in Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong. This vastly improves the overall standard of air travel in the country and makes it easier than ever before for tourists to visit Bangladesh.

Sustainable Tourism

The significant rise in international visitor numbers has brought a range of benefits to the economy. However, it has also created a number of challenges, such as the ever-growing demand for accommodation, infrastructure and services. As such, there is an urgent need to ensure that tourism in Bangladesh is sustainable.

One way that Bangladesh is promoting sustainable tourism is through the use of eco-friendly and energy efficient transport solutions, such as electric cars and buses, to support their tour operations. In addition to this, the country is also investing in organic agriculture and encouraging visitors to stay in eco-friendly lodges and hotels.

Furthermore, Bangladesh has taken several steps to reduce the environmental impact of tourism, such as waste and water management, as well as reducing plastic usage in tourism. All these measures are helping to ensure that tourism in Bangladesh is sustainable.

Visit Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a diverse and vibrant country boasting of a captivating mix of wildlife, culture, cuisine and history. From the world-famous Sundarbans mangrove forests to the peaceful tea gardens of Sylhet and the historic Ahsan Manzil palace, there is plenty to see and do in Bangladesh.
