Avenues Early Learning Centre

Avenues believes knowing a second language is essential for future global citizens. Their curriculum, starting in the ELC for ages 2 through kindergarten, builds this competency from the ground up, instilling students with a love of inquiry.

Connections are paramount at Avenues, from physical connections enabled by bridges and walkways, to visual connections across the roofscape shaped by carefully choreographed atriums. The building is also designed to support young learners through scale and space.

Community

Avenues Early Learning Centre is a family-oriented school. Its 157 students are aged between 6 weeks and 5 years, and the center is rated Exceeding through the National Quality Standards. The education and care provided by the educators at the centre is based on the individual needs of each child. This is an excellent aspect of the centre as it ensures that each child is well looked after.

In addition to the teaching and learning, physical play is also a vital component of a world-focused education. This is especially important in these early years, when children learn to manage their bodies and the relationships they will have throughout their lives.

In developing the ELC, designers at Eleven of Eleven worked closely with Avenues teachers to prototype the space most used by students. They created a full-sized mock-up of a classroom complete with prototype millwork and representation of the unique hung ceiling. This allowed faculty to interact with the design features, and provide valuable feedback before implementation.

Language Immersion

From nursery through kindergarten, learning in a second language is front and center at Avenues. They believe that knowing more than one language gives students a powerful edge in today’s global world. Kids spend 50% of their time learning in English and the other half learning in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese, switching classrooms on alternating days.

In addition to supporting the development of children’s cognitive skills, teachers are attentive to the ways in which they communicate and express themselves. They encourage children to think creatively and critically, respect differences and similarities, and develop independence in their daily lives.

Designed by Efficiency Lab for Architecture, the school’s multi-level atria provide natural light and visual connections throughout. Glazed walls and thresholds create learning pods that offer the duality of partial seclusion and visual connectivity, and a central atrium provides a gathering space for community. Educators engage in playful exploration with children to provoke ideas and inspire creativity.

Academics

The Avenues faculty is committed to building strong, nurturing relationships with students. The school also emphasizes the importance of establishing a strong partnership between home and school. Physical play is an important component of the curriculum, both as a healthy stimulus and as a way for students to learn to work with others.

The Early Learning Center is housed within a new ten-story building on the Chelsea campus. To connect the new building to its existing neighbors, Efficiency Lab strategically subtracted and added through a series of carefully choreographed atriums, creating connections between classrooms, outdoor spaces and the street.

A student admitted to one Avenues global campus—New York, Shenzhen, Sao Paulo or Silicon Valley—is automatically admitted to all other campuses. This allows families with professional commitments around the world to give their children an exceptional, flexible education. In the coming years, the Avenues team will continue to expand its reach to a worldwide ecosystem of state-of-the-art campuses and exceptional teachers united in a common mission and passionately focused on creating transformative world-focused learning experiences.

Values

Avenues Early Learning Centre believes that families are children’s first and most influential educators. Staff will work closely with parents and families, sharing information, involving them in centre activities and listening to their concerns and suggestions.

Teaching is child-focused and values the individuality of each child. Children’s learning is complex and holistic, incorporating the social, emotional, personal, creative, cognitive and physical aspects of development. Learning is viewed as dynamic and takes place in environments that are inclusive and free of bias, celebrating multiculturalism.

Each Avenues ELC will be staffed with a team of experienced teachers who are committed to building strong, nurturing relationships with students. They will also be passionate about forming strong partnerships with students and their families. Staff will be encouraged to pursue ongoing professional learning and development to enhance their knowledge and skills. They will use this knowledge to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
