Working principle of metering pump

A metering pump is a precision mechanical device that moves or pumps a certain amount of fluid or liquid over a predetermined period of time to produce a precise volume flow rate. The term metering pump covers a wide range of pumping methods, each designed to meet the needs of an application, operation or process. The application determines which type of metering pump is selected.

The selection criteria for selecting a metering pump include the viscosity of the liquid, temperature, discharge pressure, flow rate and type of wet path material. The basic structure of a metering pump consists of a pump head and a motor with a manual or electric regulation system.

Most metering pumps are piston driven positive displacement pumps in which the piston moves the fluid in the reservoir chamber. While piston-driven pumps are common, there are several other types of pump configurations for unique conditions and fluids.

Dosing pumps or dosing pumps are capable of dispensing fluids, such as acids, bases, corrosive, viscous liquids or other fluid materials, to meet the requirements of a process or application. One benefit of dosing pumps is that they accurately complete repeated discharge of the material, regardless of the type of fluid or solution.

The components of the metering pump work together to provide superior continuous performance without maintenance. In essence, metering pumps are very simple devices that have been precisely designed to achieve optimal output.

Pump driver

The drive uses AC, DC, pneumatic or hydraulic power systems to power the pump.

Driving mechanism

The power provided by the drive is rotary motion, which must be converted into reciprocating motion for use by the pump mechanism. The drive mechanism performs this power conversion by converting the rotational motion of the drive into the desired reciprocating motion. Under high pressure industrial conditions, this part of the system is immersed in a lubricant or oil bath to ensure reliability and continuous performance.
