Introduction to Steel Structure Wing Plates, Assembly, and Bailey Frames

In the 21st century, steel structures are widely known. Steel structures are praised as the “green building” of the 21st century due to their light weight, high strength, good seismic performance, and characteristics such as energy and land saving, recyclability, short construction period, and less environmental pollution during construction and demolition. Steel structures are the future direction of the construction industry.

The so-called steel structure is a structural form that can bear and transfer a certain load, which is connected by steel plates or hot-rolled, cold-bent or welded profiles (I-beams, pressed steel plates, profiles) and other steel materials through connectors (high-strength bolts, ordinary bolts, etc.), welding, riveting and other connection methods. (As shown in the figure below, steel structure bridges, factories, residences)

Steel Structure Wing Plates: The wing plate you mentioned should be called a “flange”. For example, in an “H” or “I” shaped steel beam, the flange refers to the outer two bars of the “H” or “I”, and the middle part is called the web. For example, the flange of a “T” beam is the part that extends horizontally, and the vertical part is called the web. (As shown in the figure below, H-shaped, T-shaped steel)

Steel Structure Assembly: “Assembly” is a more colloquial, understandable, and vivid word for “assembly”. It means the process of assembling multiple parts or steel structure components into a whole through welding or bolt connections, also called “assembly”.

Steel Structure Bailey Frames: Generally referred to as “Bailey Frames”. In the 1960s, China designed the Bailey steel bridge into an assembled highway steel bridge, which is the “321” assembled highway steel bridge that has been used and widely produced to this day. The original Bailey frame was a military bridge designed by a British engineer at the beginning of World War II in 1938. During World War II, this military steel bridge was widely used. After the war, many countries converted the Bailey steel bridge into civilian use after some improvements. The Bailey frame has the characteristics of simple structure, convenient transportation, fast erection speed, easy disassembly, large bearing capacity, strong structural rigidity, and long fatigue life. It is widely used in flood control and disaster relief.
