Australia is a top-notch destination for international students. Every year, Australia welcomes a large number of overseas students to the country, providing them with advanced academic facilities. Students can study, live, and work in the country during their stay there. Moreover, the Department of Home Affairs also provides students with the opportunity to work in the country after completing their graduation.

For this purpose, the job ready program (JRP) has been designed by the Australian Government to make sure that students are ready for employment in Australia. Students applying for a skilled migration visa in Australia after completing their studies must go through a job ready programme for their skills assessment.

Let's delve together to learn more about a Job Ready Programme, its basic steps, and how it works.

What is a Job Ready Programme?

The job ready programme is an employment-based skills evaluation program designed for international students to get skills assessments for immigration purposes. This program is intended for individuals wishing to apply for permanent residency in Australia but unable to get a positive skills assessment. Under this program, you will have the opportunity to enhance your skills and work experience and have a positive outcome from your skills assessment.

Important Points that You Need to Know

Below is a list of important points and terminologies that you need to know before you apply for a job ready programme in Australia;

  • If the candidate has completed his studies in Australia, it should be in compliance with a Registered Training Organization (RTO).
  • The RTO offering the program training for job readiness must be listed on the Common Wealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students.
  • Trade Recognition Australia (TRA) is the relevant assessing authority for the occupation that the job ready programme candidates must mention in their application.

Essential Steps of Job Ready Program

This program consists of four steps, which are;

  • Provisional Skills Assessment
  • Job Ready Employment
  • Job Ready Workplace Assessment
  • Job Ready Final Assessment

Let's discuss these steps in detail for a better understanding.

Step 1: Provisional Skills Assessment

Provisional skills assessment is quite similar to skill assessment, with a few exceptions. In this step, the Department of Home Affairs verifies that

  • You have completed trade qualification in Australia.
  • You are proficient in the English Language (IELTS score 6.0).
  • You have 360 hours of work experience in Australia.

After getting positive feedback on your provisional skills assessment, you can apply for a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485).

Step 2: Job Ready Employment

This step of the job ready programme is for those candidates who want to apply for a permanent visa in Australia. In this step, the candidates will be asked to find jobs in their relevant fields. Moreover, they will also have to provide proof of their job designation to the Trade Recognition Authority (TRA) in Australia. The applicant can start working for the required 12 months (1725 hours) as soon as TRA certifies that the employment is suitable.

Step 3: Job Ready Workplace Assessment

After the completion of half of the required 1725 hours of work over a minimum of six months, you can proceed to the workplace assessment. This evaluation is conducted at the applicant's place of employment. The assessor determines if the candidate works at the necessary competence level for their employment in Australia.

Step 4: Job Ready Final Assessment

Once the candidate has completed the required 1725 hours of employment, he has to submit evidence of work experience, including payslips and bank statements. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection will verify the applicant's work experience. Then, you can apply for a general skilled migration visa.

What You Need to Do After Submission of Application?

After the Department of Home Affairs receives your job ready final assessment application, you will be provided with an outcome letter within 45 days. This letter will confirm whether you have finished all the procedures in the Job Ready Program. This letter is not an endorsement. It does not formally validate your knowledge and expertise. To apply for a general skilled visa through the Department of Home Affairs, you must wait for the successful outcome of your skills assessment.
