The city of Los Angeles is opening up the data floodgates by giving researchers unprecedented high-speed access to its smart city data, a move that could spark a raft of new data-driven discoveries.Proponents of the deal say that allowing high-speed access to such a deep data pool could drive the region s leadership position on future smart city practices and technology. This peering partnership between CENIC and the City of Los Angeles represents a unique opportunity to pair the sophisticated research and analysis being done at California s great universities with the massive data being generated one of our country s most progressive Smart Cities, Los Angeles, said CENIC chair William Clebsch.Data already available but speed is keyLos Angeles currently publishes more than 1,000 datasets on its two open data portals.Presently, LA citizens are increasingly accessing city data and services through the web, reporting urban issues through MyLA311 or using Google s Waze to dodge construction in their commutes. This agreement means that young people, students of all ages, some of the world s leading thinkers and educators can now access the City s digital resources up to 1,000 times faster, said LA Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Still winning hearts and minds.AP Photo/StapletonIf you try to imagine the most pathetic gathering of humans ever, it would probably look a lot like this group of people who have amassed their fortunes by stripping the Earth of its fossil fuels and are desperately trying to squeeze the last gasp of relevance out of a backwards-thinking, planet-strangling industry. This morning, ExxonMobil held its annual shareholder meeting at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. No, we re good There s no need to reduce emissions Nah, we don t need a climate expert Meanwhile, some shareholders appeared especially progressiveAnd the CEO doesn t seem to really get itThen he said: The world is going to have to continue using fossil fuels, whether they like it or not.Sadly, this seems to happen annuallyThere was one good thing, thoughEven though the move to put a climate expert on the board was voted down, in a rare moment of clarity, voters approved what s called a proxy access measure, which is actually very good.It means that shareholders with a minority stake could eventually work together to nominate a climate scientist to become a director.

There is no cure for MS, though treatments exists to manage symptoms and help speed recovery from attacks called remissions .Eventually, most people with this form of the disease will move on to a secondary progressive phase of MS in which symptoms begin a steady march and become increasingly severe.M signifies individuals with the mutation; black circles represent individuals with MS and age of disease onset; gray circles or squares denote individuals with the mutation whose health is unknown. In the two families studied, two-thirds of the patients with the mutation developed the progressive form of the disease. Some evidence even suggests that Vitamin D and smoking plays an important role.Lastly, this research could offer clues about the more common relapsing-remitting form of the disease, while also pointing to the possibility of using personalized medicine to treat MS. As Michelle Apperson from the University of California, Davis, pointed out, In the future, we may be able to look at a patient s genetic profile or other biomarkers and choose a medication that best fits that individual.

List: The CDO is an emerging executive role - but which one is right for your business? The chief digital officer, or CDO, is an emerging role in companies looking to catch up with the digital future. This type is best suited for companies in customer-facing industries such as retail, banking, and travel, particularly if digital thinking has not yet penetrated the daily lives of their sales and marketing people. The Innovative TechnologistMuch like a highly innovative and business-focused CIO or CTO, this CDO promotes the use of new digital technologies to transform the company's entire value chain, providing the technological groundwork for new digital business models through technologies such as the Internet of Things IoT , mobility, social media, and analytics, while improving internal efficiency and finding ways to cut costs.Companies in manufacturing industries, for example, should consider turning to these executives to further optimise their supply chains and bring digital technologies to factories and to key production steps such as design and prototyping. These five archetypes provide an overview of the different roles and responsibilities a CDO could hold in order to help companies work out the best fit for their specific needs and drive their organisation towards a digital future."
China-based hackers have been fingered for bit-squatting attacks against Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party, FireEye researchers say.The attackers replicated the DPP website on a malicious domain in a bid to glean information about visitors.Attacks lasted several days last month and follow the inauguration of President Tsai Ing-wen."FireEye believes this operation likely reflects continued efforts by China-based cyber espionage operators to collect intelligence related to the DPP as it moves Taiwan away from pro-mainland China policies," FireEye researchers say.The mainland has long been subject to white hat research with dozens of reports blaming state based and patriotic groups for attacks against minority groups, rival nations, and major private sector organisations.Concrete attribution however is difficult for groups with solid operational security skills.
The cyberspying campaign is believed to have been aimed at gathering more intelligence on the DPP's policies after its recent landslide victoryCyberspies have targeted the website of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party DPP , in efforts to obtain intelligence on DPP and its members.Although Fire Eye has not attributed the attacks to a specific APT Advanced Persistent Threat group, it stated that it had detected Chinese cyberespionage groups using the spoofed site in the past."FireEye believes this operation likely reflects continued efforts by China-based cyber espionage operators to collect intelligence related to the DPP as it moves Taiwan away from pro-mainland China policies," it said. The security firm reported that the DPP website was first breached on 7 April but it later came under attack again on 13 April, despite having been fixed after the previous breach.DPP spokesperson Wang Min-sheng told AFP: "The DPP has always put great importance on cyber safety," adding that the party's website has not experienced any "major systematic attacks" in the recent past. The Chinese government recently issued statements asking Taiwan to abandon its efforts towards gaining independence.
Sounds like a market where the sales of Teslas will soon be rising. As the publication explains, Norway's four main political parties have agreed on the idea, with the intent of making it part of the country's national energy plan.Discussions on the ban have been held for months already, but it sill might be some time before it becomes finalized. You can understand why Elon Musk would be pleased with this news. The Tesla CEO enthusiastically tweeted a photo of the newspaper's cover, which featured the gas-powered car ban as its main headline.Setting the ban for a date in 2025 is a very aggressive timeline, but Norway is already recognized as being one of the world's most progressive nations when it comes to electric cars and reducing fuel-based vehicles.

Home to a majority of the European Union s most polluted cities, Poland is looking to plug in to the nascent electric car and bus industry to help it ditch the unpopular reputation as a country whose economy is hooked on coal. The government wants to boost the number of electric vehicles made in the country of 38 million people to 1 million in 2025 from 427 last year. The Development Ministry wants Poland, Europe s top coal producer and a staunch defender of the fuel in the EU, to benefit from the forecast that envisages the number of plug-in cars globally will soar to 500 million in 2040 from 1 million currently, according to Morawiecki. The U.S.-based company prepares to start release of its mass-market $35,000 Model 3 battery-powered car, which will have a minimum 215-miles 346 kilometers range. This is highly progressive and a fast-growing market, and given that countries like Norway plan to ban conventional cars from 2025, the potential is huge, not to mention the jobs that could be created in Poland, said Joanna Mackowiak Pandera, the head of the Forum for Energy Analysis in Warsaw and a former deputy environment minister.Selling a million cars in 10 years is a very ambitious target, given that less than 150,000 electric cars were sold in Europe last year.Polish cities have so far bought a total of 16 plug-in buses, while the country s biggest manufacturer, Solaris Bus Coach SA, made 1,279 vehicles last year, both electric and traditional ones, and cities replace about 1,000 of them each year.Since the nation s municipalities operate only about 11,000 buses, the government is betting on the public to buy the bulk of vehicles and reach the 1 million target.

A streetcar in Portland, Oregon, one of seven finalists Image: Gregor MacDonald via USDOT Earlier this year, seven cities were named as finalists for the Smart City Challenge, a chance to win $40 million from the US Department of Transportation to become a connected, automated city of the future.Today, the mayors of Austin, Columbus, Denver, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Portland, and San Francisco made their final arguments for why their city should get the cash.To win, the cities need to show how they plan to integrate the most progressive transportation tech currently on the horizon: self-driving cars, connected vehicles, and smart sensors.Cities also worked to recruit private sector partners and enlist matching funds from local organizations, so that $40 million will be doubled or tripled in some places. You can read summaries of all seven proposals and check out my story about San Francisco s ambitious idea to solve its housing crisis with self-driving cars. The winning city will be announced later this month.
The city already requires hosts renting out their places on Airbnb to register with the city, though that s proven difficult to enforce.Sites that don t comply could face fines of up to $1,000 daily for each listing in violation. An estimated 1,200 San Franciscans avoided foreclosure or eviction by hosting on Airbnb, an Airbnb spokesperson said in an emailed statement to WIRED, in keeping with the company s longstanding contention that allowing hosts to rent out their places on the site enable them to help cover housing costs in San Francisco s soaring market. The company said it was considering all options to keep fighting for real reform.Under the new law, San Francisco s Office of Short-Term Rentals would monitor hosting platforms like Airbnb on a monthly basis and produce an inventory of listings that don t include city registration numbers.I think the new legislation reflects a lot of the operational changes we were asking platforms to do previously, says Kevin Guy, director of the Office of Short-Term Rentals.
