How to Improve Customer Service & Why

Everybody loves a smile. Everybody hates a snarl. Your customers are no exception.

In Gregory David Roberts’ ShantaramKarla Saaranen describes Leopold Café in Mumbai as the “best place to be treated like dirt”. While an establishment as iconic as Leopold might be able to get away with a bit of rudeness here and there, it’s wise to know that almost nobody pays to be treated like dirt. In a world filled with an assortment of stresses, people place a premium on being treated like human beings. Fail to do that, you are doing a great deal of service to your competitor.

What Poor Customer Service Leads To

a). First your customers go to your competitor.

b). In due course of time, your employees go to your competitor. This is particularly dangerous because they take a great deal of competitive intelligence as they go and empower your competitor even more.

Are we stating the obvious here? We probably are. However, it’s the obvious that most often slips our notice. Take a look at a few stinker reviews on TripAdvisorBurrp and Zagat and you will find that nothing peeves customers more than sub-par customer service.

Here’s a question whose answer is worth its weight in gold – How do I improve a sub-par customer service to a whole new level?

Like all good things in life, the answer to this question is quite simple. It’s all about employee engagement.

When your employees are able to link the success of their organization their own sense of accomplishment, they bring their A-game to work.

They take pride in helping the organization achieve its goals, and jump at every opportunity to be a great ambassador for your company. These are the sort of people who’d do just about anything to ensure that your customers carry back memories of a superlative experience and share the love with everybody they know.

It’s not going to happen overnight. There’s no magic pill out there that will turn your turn your employee into customer service gods.
