What Does a PAT Test Certificate Consist of?

PAT testing in London is an important safety measure expected of employers and landlords. It is not a legal requirement, unlike the EICR. But while there is currently no law clearly stating you must get a PAT Test Certificate, there are government regulations that suggest how essential it is.

For example, landlords and employers are obliged to make sure that all electrical appliances in their business premises or property are working and well-maintained. This is to keep their employees and tenants safe and away from danger. One of the most effective ways to ensure compliance is through PAT testing.

There are actually four regulations that highly recommend PAT Testing in London, namely:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974
  • Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

PAT Testing is indeed an effective preventive measure against electrical fires and other related incidents. The following are some of the steps involve in doing the test:

Visual inspection

During PAT testing, the electrician must do a visual check-up of the portable appliances as well as stationary appliances, computers, cables, and chargers. He or she should inspect the flexible cables and take note of any signs of wear and tear.

In-depth check-up

A full PAT test should go beyond visual inspection. Electricians provide more in-depth check using their PAT testing equipment to test earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance.

Marking appliances

At the end of PAT testing, the electrician should place stickers on every appliance, indicating whether it ‘passed’ or ‘failed’ the test.  The sticker should also indicate the date or year the appliance should no longer be used.

Provision of PAT Test Certificate

If you've hired an electrician or a service provider, then a certificate should be provided to you. This will prove that the appliances have undergone the test. Also, the certificate shows a comprehensive report about the result of the test, indicating which appliances have passed or failed the standard requirements as well as the individual re-test dates.
