How to Increase Sales or Market a Stationery Store?

Experts advise to constantly change the display of goods. This will create a sense of wider choice and facilitate the process of finding the desired product. Seasonal items that are most in demand during a given season (usually school supplies) are displayed in the most visible place. At the end of the season, some of the unsold goods are returned to the warehouse, and some are sold almost at the purchase price. Don't be greedy and hide it until next season. Some of the products will simply lose their relevance (for example, calendars, diaries for a certain year, notebooks with this year's idols on the covers, etc.), and some, after long storage, will no longer look like a new product.

Try to expand the assortment of your store whenever possible. You can include in it, in addition to office supplies, educational and children's books, souvenirs and gift branded products, small toys, stickers, calendars, bookmarks, etc. All this will help increase profits (however, you will have to invest a little more).

Small office supply stores tend to purchase products from wholesalers. Choose 2-3 suppliers that offer products at the lowest prices and with the working conditions that suit you. Find out in advance the terms of delivery, even if the company is located in your city. In most cases, it will be more convenient if you are not going to buy the goods, but the supplier will bring it to you. Of course, it is much more profitable to buy goods directly from the manufacturer, but most likely the minimum batch size will be too high, and the cost of delivery from another region may even “eat up” all the benefits from purchasing directly.

To place the goods, you will need special trade equipment, which includes showcases, racks, stands with hinged elements (shelves, nets, hangers, etc.). Some of the equipment can be made by yourself. To save money, you can also purchase used equipment. Separate racks are also required for the warehouse, otherwise neither you nor your sellers will find the right product there.

It is also quite possible to make these racks with your own hands or purchase ready-made ones, including in non-specialized stores (for example, such as Ikea). Do not forget about the sign with the name of your store, posters or stickers on the windows, if there is no way to make a beautiful showcase, pillar, where you will post announcements about the store's assortment, promotions and discounts.

Financial calculations of a stationery store
For work in a small store, two sellers are enough to work every other day. However, if the sale is not supposed to be in the “behind the counter” format, then you will need another cashier and 1-2 sales assistants who will keep order, answer customer questions, replenish stocks of goods on the shelves, and deal with their layout. In addition, more maintenance staff will be required before the start of the school year, otherwise your two salespeople may not be able to cope with the increased number of buyers.

Opening a small stationery store will require 400-450 thousand rubles. This amount includes rent, purchase of the first batch of stationery, minimum trade equipment. However, there will be additional items of expenditure - ordering and installing a sign, advertising, salaries to sellers for at least the first three months of work. The markup on stationery reaches 200% for cheap products and 50-70% for more expensive products. The payback period is from 1.5 years.
