Debunking the Myths About B.Tech Degree

“India is the mother of engineers.”

Have I said the obvious? Of course, I have!

If you are a 90’s kid, you would be aware of Indian parents’ romantic relationship with engineering. The race towards B.Tech Admission starts soon after a child is born. There are special classes for the students right from the first standard to develop an acumen towards engineering in them.

Look, I don’t have any vendetta against B.Tech, but I just believe that not everyone is cut out for this noble profession. So let me clear some of the popular myths about B.Tech Admission through this article.

#1 B.Tech guarantees a high package job

The steps people think there is a fixed formula:

  • Step 1: Take Admission in B.Tech CSE.
  • Step 2: Earn a B.Tech degree.
  • Step 3: Get a swanky job.
  • Step 4: Swim in MONEY!

All the colleges highlight their highest packages but what they don’t tell you is that they have been secured by a select few students. Most of the B.Tech graduates score an average package of Rs. 4LPA offered by bus companies.

#2 MBA after B.Tech is a deadly Combo

B.tech students don’t think twice before shelling out lakhs of money over CAT coaching. If you wish to become a Manager eventually, they why are you graduating in engineering, bro? Sure, you get a good package after an MBA if you pass out of a decent college but then go for a management course in your graduation too.

#3 My Life will be set right after my B.Tech

Do you really think that MNCs are flocking around giving million-dollar packages to every B.Tech graduate? If you are an average student, it is most likely you will just land a job with a decent package or maybe no job at all.

#4 College doesn’t matter for a B.Tech degree

Have you ever heard of the famous “IIT Dream”? Don’t you think the IITians get an edge over other candidates if they have applied for the same job and position? Your college definitely affects your placement, package and personality.

#5 Marks are directly proportional to the no. of hours you study

There is no direct correlation between the two. Your marks depend on how much you can recall in the exam hall, and that depends on your grasping power. Avoid slogging a lot, mugging up things by staying up all night long.

So, I hope that I have broken your top five myths about B.Tech degree and a career in engineering. The motive is not to discourage you from pursuing it even if you have a thing for engineering but to make sure that you make an informed choice.

After reading this article, I hope you enrol in a B.Tech course for the right reasons and not because someone painted a hunky-dory picture in front of your eyes. I hope you make the best decision after thinking about the pros and cons upfront. Do a SWOT analysis and then arrive at a decision.
