How to write an IB economics IA?

Pick a suitable article

The quality of the article pretty much dictates the quality of your IA. Firstly, the source must be reliable, and the article should not be older than a few months before you start writing the IA. It should also have data that you can quote to support your analysis, but it should not have too much actual economic analysis as that would defeat the purpose of you analysing it. It is definitely helpful to ask for advice from your school teacher or a professional IA tutor or IB tutor as they have years of experience helping students choose suitable articles.

Be familiar with the assessment criteria

Your IAs will be graded according to the criteria which means that if you are familiar with them and aim to check all the boxes, you are guaranteed a high grade. The following are official IB descriptors of how each criterion is assigned a mark:

  • Criterion A: Diagrams

2    A key concept is identified and there link to the article is partially explained.
3    A key concept is identified and the link to the article is fully explained.
  • Criterion E: Evaluation
Marks    Descriptor

1    Judgements are made that are supported by limited reasoning.
2    Judgements are made that are supported by appropriate reasoning.
3    Judgements are made that are supported by effective and balanced reasoning.

Plan ahead

It is very important for any essay to have a nice structure and planning ahead certainly helps. Aside from the structure, it is also of utmost importance for you to plan what points to include. Since there is a word limit of 800 words for an economics IA, which is not a lot, there is a limited number of points that you can include as you should explain each point thoroughly and in detail. Prioritise quality over quantity.

Seek help

As per IB requirements, school teachers may not be allowed to read and help you correct your IA too many times. Therefore, if needed, be sure to seek help from professional tutors (IB Tutor, IA TutorInternational School Tutor) that can offer you some guidance and constructive criticism.
