When answering the HKDSE Biology paper, the most dreaded question type is the data analysis question, which not only takes up a lot of marks, but also requires a lot of diagrams reading. In fact, there are only a few key technique you will need in these type of questions, and if you master them properly, you can easily master the data analysis questions.

Pay attention to changes in trends and explain them accordingly

The most common type of data analysis question in HKDSE Biology is the question on reaction speed. Most of the reaction speed tends to be faster at the beginning, and then slows down and stops at the end. Students should analyze the reasons for such a change in speed and explain in sections what happens at each step of the reaction as it starts, slows down, and stops, rather than just repeating the numbers of the data or reciting irrelevant information as an answer.

Refer to the data of the question, not just recite

Many students in the face of data analysis questions will first start to bring out the textbook knowledge, and began to recite the contents or answers of previous exams, or even rely on their own imagination and making unrealistic speculation. In fact, to answer data analysis questions, student should refer to the data provided in the question, combined with their own existing knowledge, as the data are often related to life applications, so it is better to apply more common sense to your answer rather than just plain recitation.

Comparison, Calculation and Correlation Analysis

When a question asks for a comparison of two sets of data, many students will describe the two sets of data separately and then consider the answer completed. Not only is this time consuming, but you are also not getting the mark from the key points. If the question refers to two sets of data and asks for a comparison, it is appropriate to present the two sets of data for comparison with each other and to mention the similarities or differences between them.

If the question requires the calculation of specified data or indicates a value, the unit must be written unless the question specifies otherwise. The answer must not indicate any out-of-range values.

The last common type of question is data relationship analysis. If a question presents data in the form of a graph, it is impossible to derive the numerical relationship between the variables just by looking at the numbers, so you should avoid using words such as "directly related" and "inversely related".
