Director James Cameron explains why Avatar 2: The Way of Water is 3 hours and 10 minutes long. According to him, it takes a long duration to explore things that were not developed in the first film.
"Telling stories with a very interesting emotionally. The emphasis in this new film is more on the characters, stories, relationships and emotions," said James Cameron as reported by Total Film, Monday (7/11).
He said the Avatar film, which was first released in 2009, did not show much of the relationships and emotions of the characters. So, that's exactly what the sequel will do some 13 years later.
"Avatar 2 is a longer film because more characters are shown, more stories are told," he said.

Because of that, he feels there is a paradigm that must be changed, like urinating while watching a movie in the cinema.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water will center on the characters of Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, Sully and Na'vi, taking place a decade after the first film.
As such, the film sheds light on the family they built, plus additional stars in the Avatar franchise, such as Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet. The Avatar franchise will continue through a fifth film slated for release in 2028.
Meanwhile, Avatar 2: The Way of Water is scheduled to air December 14.
