Recent update (2023)

Since I began compiling statistics on the number of PRINCE2 examinations worldwide in 2012, the total count had just reached 1 million exams. Unfortunately, the accreditation body has not released annual examination statistics since then. Assuming a consistent annual exam rate of 145,000, the number of PRINCE2 exams taken could have exceeded 2 million by mid-2023, considering the 2012 baseline.

The remainder of this article, published in 2012, remains unchanged.

Original article (2012)

In 2012, the latest year for which annual figures were released by the PRINCE2 accreditation body, the global number of PRINCE2 examinations taken increased by 5% compared to 2011. The data indicated that over 144,000 individuals participated in PRINCE2 examinations in 2012, surpassing the previous year's figure of 136,000. By the end of 2012, the total count of candidates who had taken PRINCE2 exams since 1996 exceeded 1 million.

Notably, the total number of exams in 2012 set a new record, surpassing the previous highest in 2011 by over 8,000. Additionally, 2012 witnessed record numbers of candidates taking both Foundation and Practitioner examinations.

Growth outside UK

The expansion of PRINCE2 exams was evident across all regions, except in the UK, which experienced a decline of 6% in exams. The most rapid growth during 2012 was observed in Central Asia, with a notable 148% increase compared to the previous year, followed by Scandinavia with a growth of 61%, Eastern Europe at 23%, North America at 16%, Africa and East Asia at 11%, Australasia at 9%, and Western Europe (excluding the UK) with a 1% increase.

The overall upward trend in exams across regions was reflected in individual countries, although the growth rates varied. The UK, along with the Netherlands and Italy, deviated from the general pattern. Despite remaining the largest market, the UK experienced a 6% year-on-year decline in exams in 2012. The Netherlands saw an even greater decline of 13%, likely indicating market saturation in both countries. Italy showed an 8% decrease in the number of exams.

On a positive note, India emerged as the fastest-growing country in 2012, with a substantial 168% increase in exams. Following India, Denmark experienced a 52% growth, France at 42%, China at 26%, Poland and South Africa both at 20%, Czech Republic at 15%, Germany at 14%, and Australia at 4%. The remarkable growth of PRINCE2 was anticipated to continue, having surpassed the 1 million mark by September 2012. A decade earlier, only 35,000 PRINCE2 exams were taken, marking a 400% increase over the span of 10 years.

Taking exams online

Remarkably, the count of individuals opting for online PRINCE2 exams has been on a swift upward trajectory since 2012, with a rising trend as more students engage in PRINCE2 course online.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the administration of all paper-based exams ceased, making exclusively digital online exams accessible through PeopleCert.
