Hair transplant surgery is a medical procedure in which hair from donor area of the scalp is moved to recipient area with bald spots. Hair is usually taken from the back and sides of the head, and transplanted to the front, top, or crown of the scalp. Groups of one to four hairs that occur naturally together are known as follicular units.

The cosmetic surgeons perform two different types of surgeries (FUT, FUE) for extracting the follicular units from the donor area. All the established cosmetic clinics offer these two procedures that are popular across the world.

Cosmetic surgeons, like Dr Rajat Kapoor, are also experimenting nowadays with more advanced FUE or FUT techniques. Some advanced hair transplant surgeries are performed with the assistance of hand-held punch-suction devices and image-guided robotic systems.

In the follicular unit extraction or FUE procedure, the units are directly extracted or harvested from the scalp one-by-one.

In follicular unit transplantation or FUT procedure, A strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head, and this donor strip is separated into individual units with the assistance of a stereo-microscope.

FUT is suitable for patients who have advanced baldness or extensive hair loss. FUE is apt for younger patients, who keep their hair short, and expect reliable and consistent results in a short period of time.

The patients who undergo FUT or FUE procedures are subjected to anaesthesia, minor incisions, punches, and sutures.

They have to follow post-operative guidelines suggested by the cosmetic surgeon in order to achieve effective hair growth.

Dr Rajat is best hair transplant doctor in Mumbai, and he suggests the following 9 things to do after a hair transplant surgery at the cosmetic clinic -

  1. Post-Operative Medications

After the surgery, the surgeon prescribes antibiotics for the patients to avoid infections. Some patients experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, facial swelling, hiccups, or even bleeding. They are prescribed anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs. Bleeding is rare, but it can be contained by applying pressure on the donor or recipient areas of the scalp with a gauze or clean cloth.

  1. Physical Exercise

The patient has to avoid physical exercise for a minimum of one week as it can cause swelling or hair graft/ implant damage. Mild to normal exercises can be resumed after 7 to 10 days, but strenuous exercises that stretch or pressurize the donor areas have to be avoided for several weeks.

  1. Diet

Balanced diet is healthy and the patients have to avoid junk foods or over-eating that may lead to stomach upset. Although there are no food restrictions, the patients will be prescribed some medication and they have to consume foods that are rich in protein, iron and micronutrients.  Biotin, anti-oxidants, Vitamin B, and Vitamin D may be consumed as they assist in hair growth.

  1. Hair Care

The newly implanted hairs have to be protected, and additional symptoms can be also be avoided by taking care of a few things. Do not bend to pick up things, but instead lower the body for 5 to 7 days after transplant. Protect the scalp, hair, and head while getting into the car, or when moving around in corridors or rooms with low roofs or low door frames. Avoid haircuts and hair dyes for 3 to 4 weeks, and wear a hat when you go out into strong bright or sun.

  1. Sleep

Sleep with the head elevated for a few days using 2 or 3 pillows and keep a towel roll under the neck for comfort and pain relief.

  1. Hair Wash

Wash the hair twice a day for the first week using good quality shampoo and be gentle during application, rinsing, and drying. You can resume normal showers after 7 to 10 days upon doctor's advice.

  1. Donor Sutures

Absorbable stitches dissolve in 3 to 4 weeks’ time, and the surgeon will suggest a re-visit after a week (if necessary).

  1. Water Sports

Avoid swimming, sunbathing, and sauna for at least one month.

  1. Lifestyle

Avoid alcohol for 3 to 4 days and quit smoking for at least 2 weeks after the hair transplant procedure.
