Why WiFi is needed in schools?

WiFi is becoming a resource that, like water, isconsumed rapidly and everywhere! In America, as we enter new buildings, a common question is, “What’s your WiFi password?” There is a reason for this constant requesting of WiFi. The internet and its capabilities allow us to read a book, watch a video, learn a subject, or message a loved one within seconds. What used to be a privilege starting in 1991, is becoming a necessity in our fast-paced world. WiFi is a benefit for everyday life especially in the academic classroom.

We often wonder, what is the best way to inform students? How do we prepare our children for maximum success in academia and beyond? One of several answers to these questions is that universal internet access and WiFi accessibility will help students learn at increasing speeds. My first thoughton WiFi in schools involves the importance of a level playing field. Not every home has WiFi. Not every home is close to accessible WiFi. Pew Research Center has discovered that, “Overall, 84% of U.S. households own a computer, and 73% of U.S. households have a computer with a broadband connection to the internet,”(Rainie). Households without a computer or access to WiFi are at a severe disadvantage regarding education. While information may take years to be updated in a physical textbook, the internet can be updated instantaneously. For example, upon the introduction of new governmental decisions, a child with access to online articles will be at advantage in comparison to a peer with no technology and outdated material.

To my argument on equal access, some may bring up the free public library. Yes, libraries do offer free WiFi to people, but there is a time limit to these services. Also, some children may have no feasible way to travel to a library all the time. School is a place that every child (excluding homeschoolers) attend daily which is why WiFi needs to be a part of everyday life in school buildings. Technology isn’t just a fad, it’s an American lifestyle and helps discipline students in ways that textbooks cannot. Not only is it important to have WiFi, it’s important to have fast-speed WiFi to encourage accountability in schools. For router setup you can visit RouterInstructions.com website.

A major advantage of online assignments is that accountability is bolstered. Services like Google Drive and Microsoft Outlook allow users to easily access group projects, slides, or spreadsheets. These services also have a feature where you can review what each member has individually done which eliminates the classic, “I did all the work,” narrative. If every student has access to WiFi and technology in their primary place of learning they are all capable of turning in work on time and utilizing high-speed resources. I believe that online assignments also allow all students to feel like a full part of the assignment, and a part of a greater whole as they can watch their peers work from their own personal screen.

It’s important to consider a diverse student body when analyzing the importance of WiFi in education. WiFi has a positive effect on students from every point on the spectrum. A huge capability WiFi brings to academia is mass communications. A student who is hard of hearing, deaf, blind, or mute can have additional stimuli incorporated through the availability of online resources. Children with behavioral disorders can access a stylized learning plan. Likewise, teachers can grade assignments faster, and ultimately devote more time to the students in the classroom.

I think that the idea of WiFi in the classroom is just the beginning of positive change. While researching articles on the significance of WiFi, I stumbled across the innovative idea of having WiFi in school buses. The CNN article read, “WiFi school buses are one new approach to help students without access to fast broadband at home get connected,” (Randhawa). This could change the lives of students on long commutes. They could work on homework on the bus and then have time to play or relax when they get home.

I would love to see how we can further this discussion. On major hurdle I invasion is school funding for WiFi and electronics. Here, I think the community needs to drive change especially in the lower income areas. Regarding technology, donations of old laptops, iPads, etc. could be donated to schools with theintent of giving every child an equal opportunity. I believe that the most feasible way to ensure WiFi in schools is to receive money from the federal government. I do believe that WiFi will one day be present in every school especially because it is becoming such a necessity in every day American life.
