What exactly is a Mirrorless Camera, and why you need one?

Mirrorless cameras have become quite the buzz nowadays, and there is no day I won't be browsing around some tech news and won't come across something that relates to the Mirrorless Cameras.

So what exactly is this mirrorless camera then and what makes it special?

Well, to begin with, a mirrorless camera is a camera that is without a reflex mirror, which has been a key component of the cameras of the past, and in particular the DSLR cameras. This reflex mirror would reflect the light to the optical viewfinder and hence behave as the key component in taking those stills.
So in the mirrorless cameras, what they have done is taken away those reflective mirrors and taken away the optical viewfinder, and let the image sensor be exposed to the incoming light at all the time. And of course, the term mirrorless came in, because well, all the previous generation cameras were all mirrored.

The Mirrorless cameras didn't really become very popular until the advent of Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses. Not only they allow you to switch the lens on the go, but all the modern point and shoot cameras also happen to be mirrorless. And despite the lack of reflective mirrors and rangefinders helping with  keeping the gadetary on the minimum, the form factor of most of the Mirrorless Cameras still ends up being more or less similar to the DSLR's out therem because of the size of the imaging sensor.

Mirrorless cameras are not inherently better or worse than the average DSLR out there, and ofcourse there are all kinds of DSLR cameras and Mirrorless camers out there to draw comparisons with. But they do have advantages in some areas and in particular with recording videos, and disadvantes in areas like the battery life.

But it all comes down to what kind of camera would best fit for your specific, still or video shooting needs. Mirrorless Cameras are a great choice for the casual photographers, where in particular the short battery life is not too much of a conern. However, the more advances users might still prefer going with their customized and trusted DSLR's.

Now the Mirrorless cameras do retail for different price ranges, but if you are looking for a decent one that fits around the $1000 budget mark, then you might want to checkout this simple guide and comparison for the best mirrorless cameras that fall in and around the $1000 price point.

Besides as the time goes on and there are more advances in the technology, we are pretty sure the mirrorless cameras will become the need of every photographer and finally replace the DSLR's and all the complexities they bring to the table.
