Important Things to Consider While Hanging a Mezuzah Prayer

According to the holy book commandments, all Jewish homeowners inscribe a mezuzah prayer, a parchment scroll with verses of the prayer, which is placed to the right of the door post of every room in their homes.  The mezuzah is considered a declaration and reminder of faith, and as a symbol of god’s watchful care.  It is believed that placing a mezuzah on the doors of a home or office protects the residents, whether they are inside or out.  Here are some important points to consider while hanging a mezuzah prayer.

What you need

  • Kosher mezuzah scrolls.
  • Protective mezuzah cases to insert the mezuzah scrolls.
  • Measuring tape, scale and pencil to mark and measure the spot on the door post.
  • Hammer, nails, screws and a drill.

Which rooms require a mezuzah?

Before purchasing mezuzah prayer scrolls, work out how many your house requires.  A mezuzah can be hung in all the doorways leading to a room in your home, except bathrooms and closets.

Mark the spot

A mezuzah prayer in a mezuzah case is hung on the right doorpost in the bottom third of the door post.  Mark the place and make it ready to hang.

Read the blessing

The blessing is recited once before you hang the mezuzah.  The blessing you recite will be for all the mezuzah prayers you are going to hang at your room doorways.
