How Does Organisational Culture Affect Employee Behaviour?

When it comes to running an organization in a fruitful manner, you have to make sure that the work culture of the company is sound. Organisational Culture basically represents the questions of Whys and Hows of the things being done by the employees. The vision of the company, the process in place to take that vision forward, the office rituals, and the behavioral relationships between the employer and employee together constitute employee behavior.

The importance of organizational culture is much more crucial than a lot of entrepreneurs usually think it is. This is because it not only helps you build good relationships with your employees but also helps you build your reputation as well.

However, the biggest reason to have a positive and efficient organizational culture surely is the effect it has on your employee’s behavior in various aspects. Lisa Samara, who’s the president of Domus Inc., an employee engagement agency in Philadelphia, explains a few key points about how good work culture plays a key role in an employee’s life.

Employee’s performance

The best and the most effective way to ensure that your employee performs is by making him or her feel valued at the workspace. An employee should have some power over his position and job profile. It could be something as small as an option to work from home when required or being able to choose projects or having some decision-making power.

However, this may not be applicable to all the employees, especially the freshers, so what a company can do is to include different training programs or workshops where the employees feel like they are growing in their careers.

Employee’s happiness

One of the biggest issues most companies face is high-performing employees quitting for better career opportunities. This often happens because they get tired of the organizational culture they currently are in. This is why the culture should be such that the employee feels happy to be coming to the office every day and perform well.

Here, we are not just talking about the monetary benefits but also the benefits related to the position in the company. The employers can include a continuous evaluation cycle at the end of which top performers will get a raise in their position and salary.

Furthermore, you should always promote a sound work-life balance for employee wellbeing so that they do not feel like they are being overworked. The employers must promote flexible working hours if possible and provide transportation benefits as well. It could be a session of a fun indoor activity or a sports tournament every quarter. It is important that the employees see the workplace as a space where they can have fun.

How to ensure Employee engagement?

Highly engaged employees are more productive and are less likely to look for new jobs. It is the organization’s duty to ensure that the employees remain engaged with their seniors and to the overall ideology of the company.  There are certain things that a company should include in its organizational culture to ensure that this if followed.

  • Communication is the key – If an employer does not communicate freely with the employee, then things can fall apart quite quickly. In fact, this holds true for all positions of the hierarchy chain in a company. A junior must feel confident and comfortable about discussing things with their seniors. The employee must feel heard and valued otherwise it could lead to negative results like people quitting.

  • Safety concerns should be met – Employees should feel safe while traveling to work and while working as well. You can do this through an insurance policy plan insured for them or by providing transportation services. Such a culture always helps them perform well.

  • Keeping a collaborative approach – One of the biggest aspects of having a good organizational culture is to include a collaborative approach. Instead of creating teams and dividing them, you should encourage the departments to work as a cohesive unit and perform like a well-oiled machine.

  • Positive growth – No employee wants to feel like their growth is stagnating. The company should have career growth plans for employees and communicate with them regarding the same so that they know how their positive performance can help them grow.

An organization’s culture is of paramount importance as it directly affects the behavior of employees on multiple levels, all of which directly translates to the business performance of the company. The work culture should be efficient, remodeled from time to time, and reinforced to ensure that the employees perform at their top level.
