A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one electrical circuit to one or multiple circuits. Transformers have become significant for the overall process of the transmission, distribution, and utilization of alternating current of the electric power.

. In a distribution transformer, the Ampere rating is increased by enhancing the size of the primary and secondary windings.

. The Earthing transformer is a three-phase transformer connected to the power system to provide a neutral connection for earthing. It provides a relatively low-impedance path to the ground.

. It works as an auxiliary transformer because it can supply a local auxiliary load which is used in three-phase electric power systems to provide a ground path and that’s why also called as neutral coupler. 

Cooling methods employed in Transformers.

. In the winding of the transformer, losses occur during the process of energy transfer. These losses are dissipated in the form of heat that damages the windings. So, it is necessary to maintain the transformer at an optimum temperature by the proper arrangement of cooling.

. In the Oil cooled type Transformers, the windings are immersed in oil so that the heat energy can be transmitted to oil through the process of conduction. Furthermore, the heat gets dissipated to the surrounding.

To acquire better efficiency in the power plant applications, the heat exchangers use Cryogenics, like nitrogen cooling. It results in faster thermal cycles, reduced maintenance costs, lower temperature limits and economical electricity usage. The type of cooling method that a transformer uses, generally determines the power rating. Transformers are also used in multifarious electric power applications and also are used for the coupling of various stages of signal-processing circuits.
