If you are done with your orthodontic treatment, you would be advised to wear retainers. Retainers are of various kinds – fixed and removable. Most of you would ask your Woodbridge orthodontist to get clear retainers for you. We totally understand because clear retainers are removable and they are very comfortable to put in your mouth. No matter which retainers you do choose, it is very important to maintain hygiene and cleanliness. When you have permanent bonded retainers, they will be cleaned automatically when you brush or floss, but in case you choose clear retainers over others, you should know the right way to clean them.

Clear retainers sit inside your mouth and can easily accumulate plaque, bacteria, tartar, and bacteria. As you brush and floss your teeth every day, it is important to clean your retainers too. Your orthodontist will tell you when and how you must keep your retainers in the mouth. A few would be told to wear the retainers the entire day and on the other hand, some would be advised to wear the retainers only during the night. You can further discuss it with your Washington DC orthodontist to know how things will work out in your case.

Retainers are important because they help you keep your teeth in place. Your teeth have just moved to a new place and they are not very comfortable there. If you leave your teeth on their own, they might shift back to the previous position rendering your entire treatment useless. Thus, it is important to wear retainers at the night for the rest of your life at least during the night.

Let us now see how you must keep your clear retainer clean. If you have had the treatment of Invisalign from your Washington DC orthodontist, you will not have any problem with wearing these retainers. You would already have some idea about cleaning them. To clear your removable retainers, you must follow the below-mentioned steps:

* It is important that you clean your retainer every time you remove it. You need to clean them while they are still wet. This will ensure that all the debris is cleaned before they drys and get stuck to the surface of the retainers.

* If you want to deep clean your retainers, mix lukewarm water with some mild dish soap. Use a gentle toothbrush or denture brush to gently scrub away plaque and other debris. The use of toothpaste is not recommended because they are abrasive and they might scratch the retainer’s surface.

You can also use a cotton swab to get into the deepest grooves and ridges to clean plastic retainers. You can take help from your Washington DC orthodontist to know more.
