Projected Capacitive Touch Screen: Introduction, Types & Uses

Projected capacitive touch panels, well-recognized by various acronyms PCAP or PCT, are the modern-age modules used in touch screens these days. Unlike the resistive panels, PCAPs can be multi-touch.

One might get confused when we say PCAPs are used more than resistive touch panels but it has to be noticed that capacitive touchscreens were invented before resistive touchscreens. Of course, they were not as accurate and responsive as they are manufactured today.

Where resistive touch panels respond to the pressure released by the stylus (a pen-sized utensil used for electronic devices featuring resistive touch panels) or human touch, capacitive touch screens are responsive to the conductivity exposed by the human body touch.

The formation of PCAPs includes an insulating glass coated by a transparent conductive material (Indium Tin-Oxide in most cases). The thin film of insulating material acts as a separator between transparent thin films of conducting material.

Types of PCAPs

PCAPs are of two types on the basis of touch-sensing terminologies; Self-Capacitive and Mutual Capacitive.

Benefits of Capacitive Touch Panels

Capacitive Touch Panels provides features like multi-touch points.

This type of touch screens exhibits higher resolutions and increased efficiency. It is a more common type of capacitance. It works the applying a uniform electric field on the capacitors in its array.

Devices using mutual capacitance touch panels can sense bare fingers and thin surgical and gloves made of conductive material including food service gloves.

Uses

PCAPs are used in devices with high-performing and clearer screens. It is often utilized with increased optical transmissivity and gestures.

Some of the real-time applications are Projected Capacitive touch screens.

  • Gaming
  • ATM machines
  • Mobile devices, i.e. smartphones, tablets

In the Nutshell

The mutual capacitive touch screens are comparatively more popular than resistive touch panels. It is because they provide an unlimited multi-touch facility which turns out to create a larger scope in the field of manufacturing for this type of touch panels. The market is evolving rapidly and leading manufacturers of this industry including Microtips Technology have contributed with their competitive development in the market.
