PEO was established on 14th June back in 1922. It is the regulating and licensing body for professional engineering in the province that governs over 85,000 license and certificate holders. PEO regulates professional engineering in Ontario to protect the public interest. 

PEO or Professional Engineers Ontario are appointed for setting the criteria for admission. They standardize the practice of engineering in the province. PEO is an authorized body that ensures every aspect linked to public safety and welfare. 

Moreover, Professional Engineers Ontario offers leadership to the engineering profession in the country. This authority encourages the contribution of professional engineers along with their service in the application of science and technology. Thus, they ensure the benefits of mankind. 

According to the Professional Engineers Act, the practice of professional engineering means any act of designing, planning, composing, evaluating, reporting, directing, and advising. Maintaining equal standards for entering into the profession in every jurisdiction of the country helps the Ontario Professional Engineers in relocating. They can shift from one province to another conveniently. They have immensely benefited the technological world gaining noticeable recognition in the world of technology through instant communication.

It operates the applicants, holders, and stakeholders professionally by describing rectitude, reliability, and efficiency. PEO shows respect for its applicants, staff, external stakeholders, license holders, and volunteers. They ensure informative communications and fair practices. PEO expects that the stakeholders will protect the public interest.

Guidelines for applying in the Professional Engineers Ontario 

Carefully fill up the application form

First of all, you have to fill up the application carefully. Make sure to fill in every detail about your name, identity proof, address, academic background, and employment background. 

Complete the academic assessment

Next, you need to complete the academic information. The information includes a description of all related courses and other abstracts of the post-graduate programs. Here, you need to complete the competency-based assessment. If you are a graduate of CEAB, then you have to provide authentic transcripts. The original transcripts will be directly sent to the academic institution of PEO. For Non-CEAB graduates, original transcripts, proof of degrees, diplomas will be required. 

The documents need to be translated into English by a certified member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario. It can also be prepared by a licensed professional engineer in Canada. The internal accreditation department of PEO will assess the applicants’ academic details. PEO can sign applicants for an exam process to fulfill all the educational requirements. You can apply for this exam from outside of Canada as well. 

Go through the professional practice exam

It is a 3-hours exam, and it consists of 2 parts: Law and ethics. It’s a closed book essay format exam. It gets held thrice a year. Applicants can appear across and outside of Canada for this exam. In case you cannot attend, you can request another date as well. The minimum passing mark will be 50%. In case of failure, you have to re-appear only for the failed parts of the exam papers. 

Show your engineering experience

This step comes when you successfully complete the exams. You need to provide proper information about your engineering experience. You have to give details about your valid engineering experience. You have to give at least 12 months of engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction. Write your engineering experience in detail in the Experience Record Form. You will get this form on the PEO website. Professional Engineers Ontario provides suggestions on how to describe your eligibility. 

Finally, you have to provide a minimum of three references. The references should be reflective of your completed work. It should include licensed professional engineers who have been your direct supervisors. The references should be attested to your technical abilities. 

PEO or Professional Engineers Ontario will offer a provisional license to those candidates who will obtain the P.Eng degree. These candidates have to fulfill their one-year Canadian experience. This license needs to be renewed every year so that the PEO case file will be active.
