Q&A With A Pro

I’m very excited about this post, not only because I gathered the most frequently asked questions from all of you, but mostly because they will be answered by a professional this time. Chick for making this happen, and Anthony Civitano for answering your questions.

Anthony holds a New York State Cosmetology license and is a board director for the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, Cosmetology Educators Association, and is an Ex-President and current Director of the New York Beauty School Association and the National Cosmetology Association.

1. Do’s and don’ts of transitioning winter skincare regimen into spring.

Transitioning from the Winter months where the skin is drier into the Summer months we need to worry about dehydration. SPF is important all year long, but in the Summer months, consistency is essential. During the Summer months, your skin tends to need less intensive moisture but more hydration. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid.

2. What’s the best way to store half-used skincare products until next season?

Most skincare products have a shelf life of approximately 2 years. Always keep the lid on tight, and if the product does not come in its own container, then be sure to store it in an air-tight container. If products are “organic” or “all-natural”, follow up with the manufacturer.

3. Are ‘green’ or ‘natural’ products really better for your skin?

This depends on the clients’ skin type and conditions. “Green” or “natural” products can be just as irritating to a client who has sensitive skin. These products are not necessarily good for everyone. Allergic reactions can occur. If a client is looking for more instant gratification, a cosmeceutical may be a better choice.

4. At what age is it time to start using anti-ageing skincare?

You should start a skincare regimen as early as possible. The sooner you start your skincare regiment, the better your skin will be throughout your life. As far as adding in products that are considered “Anti-Aging”, at the age of 25 would be your best choice.

5. How many products do you really need for your skincare routine (the essential minimum)?

Many of today’s skincare lines have Exfoliating Cleansers. This is like a 2 for 1 product. It is a good idea to have a Toner and a Moisturizer that contains SPF for your daily skin routine.
