New Peugeot 308 / 2022

This is the third generation of the 308. It is a completely new model, with a longer body mounted on a platform that has grown in wheelbase, but that does not represent an appreciable gain in habitability. It has improved equipment and, for the first time there are plug-in hybrid versions that complement the range of diesel and gasoline engines. It replaces the 2017 Peugeot 308.

The best thing about the new 308 is that it has a smooth ride, a balanced and effective suspension, and is well insulated from outside noise sources. The worst thing, in my opinion, is the ergonomics: Peugeot has given top priority to achieving a spectacular design, especially in the interior, but has sacrificed to an excessive extent the space for passengers and, even more, the usability of the vehicle.

The design of the bodywork (image gallery of the exterior of the 308) and the cabin has changed a lot, although it maintains the configuration that Peugeot calls i-Cockpit, which is characterized by the use of a smaller steering wheel than usual and flattened at the top and bottom and the placement of the instrument panel above the steering wheel and closer to the windshield. We give more information on these and other matters in the Interior Impressions section.

It is on sale in a price range from 21 500 euros for the most affordable version (Puretech 110 with Active finish) to 41 900 euros for the most expensive version (Hybrid 225 eAT8 with GT Pack finish). If we take as a reference the price of the access version to the range, the 308 is at an intermediate point compared to its alternatives: it is more expensive than a Ford Focus, a Hyundai i30, a SEAT Leon or a Citroen C4, and more affordable than a Volkswagen Golf or an Audi A3 Sportback (list of passenger cars between 4.2 and 4.5 meters long with engines between 100 and 130 hp).

The lowest-priced plug-in hybrid version costs 33,000 euros, has 179 hp and a range in electric mode of 60 km (data sheet). The main alternatives are the 159 hp Renault Mégane E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid and the 204 hp SEAT Leon 1.4 eHybrid. Both are slightly less expensive than the Peugeot and Toyota Corolla. But the Leon is the more attractive as it stands out from the other two in terms of power and electric range (64 km).
