MrBeast And Mark Rober’s #TeamSeas Is Raising Millions For Ocean Cleanup

We’re witnessing one of the biggest and baddest cleanup projects in history. Mr.Beast and Mark Rober got together for the second time to show the world that trash doesn’t belong in the ocean. The outcome of this collaboration is named Team Seas.

But what is Team Seas, what does it hope to achieve, and how is it raising millions of dollars for ocean cleanup?

What Is Team Seas?

Team Seas is a collaboration between the internet and two non-profit organizations. These organizations are the Ocean Cleanup and the Ocean Conservancy. Both organizations hope to clean the world’s most polluted rivers and prevent trash from reaching our beaches.

While Mr.Beast and Mark Rober are the founders of Team Seas, hundreds of thousands of people have already joined the cause. The YouTubers got together with hundreds of content creators to promote the project in hopes of raising awareness for a much larger issue. Some content creators teaming up with Team Seas include Hank Green, Physics Girl, MatPat, Marques Brownlee, Veritasium, Safiya Nygaard, and hundreds of others.

The goal is to raise $30 million. For every dollar the community raises, Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Cleanup promises to remove one pound of plastic and trash from the ocean, rivers, and beaches. The concept is quite simple, but Team Seas is a long way from reaching its goal.

At the current time of writing, Team Seas has raised more than $11 million.

Who Donates To Team Seas?

The biggest contributors are by far a few individuals who have the money and share the enthusiasm of Team Seas. The largest donation so far is $1,200,001 from Tobias Lütke (CEO OF Shopify). His donation is a single dollar more than Erik Bergman’s donation, (founder of Great.com). The Swedish entrepreneur donated $1,2 million with the hopes of meeting Mr.Beast and Mark Rober one day.

The last million-dollar donation is from the Bikeoff Foundation. One of the very first contributions came from YouTube Originals with $400,000. Mr.Beast and Mark Rober chipped in $100,000 of their own money to get the project started.

These donations alone account for 3 million pounds of trash cleared from our oceans and beaches. With the help of both non-profit organizations, Team Seas has the means to achieve this goal.

But even if million-dollar donations keep coming in, the vast majority of donations are your everyday fans and sympathizers. You can contribute in a few ways, but a single dollar helps a lot. You can also buy #teamseas merchandise and volunteer with both non-profit organizations for ocean and beach cleanup.

How Is Team Seas Helping Put An End To Ocean Trash?

While Team Seas hopes to raise $30 million to remove 30 million pounds of trash, the ultimate goal is to raise awareness. Our rivers pollute the ocean and the wildlife that lives in them. It is also harmful to us. On October 29th, Mark Rober posted a video about Team Seas on his official YouTube channel. In the video, Mark explains how the oceans get polluted. And how they plan on putting a stop to it.

Mark also explains that 1% of the dirtiest and polluted rivers account for 80% of the trash found in the ocean. So by focusing on these rivers, the Ocean Cleanup and Ocean Conservancy hope to put an end to the problem. One-half of the money raised will fund trash-eating robots that collect trash from the 1% of most-polluted rivers. The other half will go into funding volunteer-led beach cleanups.

Both non-profit organizations come into Team Seas as partners with years of experience and dedication to ending ocean pollution. The official goal is to raise $30 million by January 1st, 2022. Will Team Seas pull it off? Every donation counts, and by donating as little as $1, you help Team Seas be one step closer to their final goal.

How Is Team Seas Spreading the Word?

Crowdfunding $30 million seems an impossible task without paid advertisements. And even if Mr.Beast and Mark Rober do have some paid advertisements, most of the hype and traction comes from the fans. Social media can be a powerful tool to help spread the word. That’s precisely why they teamed up with content creators and celebrities. Since everyone can see eye-to-eye for such a worthy cause, everybody wins.

As more people share the word, more people discover the cause. Even if the internet looks like a place of constant drama and arguing, Team Seas proves to everybody that the internet can get together for this one thing.

Mr.Beast and Mark Rober started Team Trees two years ago. The goal of their first collaborative project was to raise $20 million and plant 20 million trees. Even if the project was a huge success, people still donate. Mark Rober said that Team Trees plants 2,600 trees every month.
