Licorice root, also known as Mulethi and sweet root, is a commonly used ingredient in Asian and Middle Eastern recipes. Apart from its unique taste that imparts food a pleasant flavor, Licorice is also used as a herb in the treatment of a number of diseases. Here is a list of a few common conditions in which Licorice proves to be beneficial.

  1. Common cold: Licorice or mulethi is a very useful herb in the treatment of a common cold. It is given very commonly to children with recurrent common colds.
  2. Chronic fatigue: Chronic fatigue affects the quality of life of a person making her or him less productive. This also leads to a psychological impact on the person’s life. Mulethi is known to be useful in alleviating chronic fatigue and improving energy levels.

  8. Weight loss: Recent studies have shown the effectiveness of licorice in weight loss. It helps in increasing the body’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) which is responsible for burning the consumed calories and controls weight gain.
  9. Menopausal symptoms: The female body undergoes a series of changes during menopause. Not all women have smooth symptom-free menopause; many of them undergo several menopausal symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, body aches, etc. These symptoms at times can significantly affect the quality and psychological state of the mind.   10. Alopecia: Alopecia, commonly known as baldness may occur diffusely all over the scalp or in patches.   11. Depression: Licorice has been used as an effective remedy in the treatment of depression, especially in elderly patients and women who have recently undergone childbirth (postnatal depression).
