What are the market dynamics in the Mali telecommunication services industry?

The Intra-African Connectivity Project, aimed at interconnecting African countries to leverage affordable internet either by submarine, terrestrial, or satellite technology, has completed the initial phase of the project with the interconnection of Mali, Guinea, and Senegal. The final phase, planned to be completed by 2025, will result in increased internet capacity in Mali and other African countries.

Also, the ACE submarine cable, which connects 16 countries, including Mali, went active in June 2021. The cable is controlled by a consortium of 20 companies, including telcos like Orange, MTN, Dolphin Telecom, and other regional players. The 17,000km cable, which costs over $700 million to build, runs from Africa’s west coast and into Europe, connecting Duynefontein, South Africa, to Penmarch, France, at its northernmost point. This deployment will enhance the connectivity in the country and will support fixed network infrastructure improvement.

Moreover, in April 2021, Sonatel, Senegal’s incumbent telecom operator, Envol Technology, an ICT firm based in Mali, and Sogem, an African energy firm, signed an agreement that allows Sonatel and Envol to manage Sogem’s 1,728km fiber-optic infrastructure across Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. The project will combine the terrestrial network and international submarine cable network to bring more reliable and higher-speed connectivity to the four countries. This network will make a significant contribution to the region’s internet growth by supporting the ICT ecosystem, ensuring fair access between the countries.
