Shoulder Pain and Subacromial Bursitis

Shoulder-related pain is one of the most common issues one sees in an MSK Therapy clinic. There is a huge range of potential shoulder-related problems, primarily down to the shoulder complex, invariably being the most complicated within the body. Equally, many types of trauma involve the shoulders in some way, shape or form. A widespread shoulder issue is Subacromial Bursitis, which can prove particularly debilitating and quickly become a chronic problem. The human body's initial response to injury involves the inflammatory response, which carries out many functions and starts the healing process. However, there can be occasions where there is a cycle of inflammation due to irritation or interruption of the normal healing process. In some respects, much like if one kept picking at a scab, the injury takes far longer to heal, and there is likely to be more scar tissue. Once a bursa becomes inflamed (Bursitis), particularly the subacromial bursa within the shoulder joint, it is easily irritated. It is relatively common for both shoulders to exhibit similar symptoms at some point if issues are not dealt with effectively.

Many sports and work-related musculoskeletal injuries arise for two reasons. A specific trauma directly or indirectly affecting tissues or gradual repetitive trauma and Subacromial Bursitis is no different. However, there are also occasions where a bursa becomes infected, which can also result in Bursitis. Luckily, the pain and restricted mobility are resolvable with the proper treatment approach. The linked article covers far more detail on possible causes, symptoms, preventative strategies, self-help and treatment options.
