RECURRENT MISCARRIAGE - A BROKEN DREAM

Every couple is elated and looking forward to holding a little bundle of joy in their hands, the moment they find out about pregnancy.

But It is a devastating moment for a them when they lose their baby soon after getting pregnant.

First time, if unfortunately, they miscarry in the first three months of pregnancy, they are still consolable as we know 10 % of all pregnancies do miscarry.

Second time this happens, they break down and ask for answers.

To miscarry twice in the first three months is defined as recurrent miscarriage.

We conduct several tests to be able to find a cause but despite our best efforts cause is found in only 35% of cases.

If possible, we always recommend to send the tissues of the fetus, if uterus has been cleaned surgically, for microarray to find if there is any chromosomal cause for miscarriage. This is the commonest cause of first trimester miscarriage. In some types of chromosomal abnormalities (unbalanced translocations), the couple will have to undergo karyotyping and if found to have chromosomal abnormalities, further pregnancies are advised to be IVF with PGD.

We also conduct blood tests to rule out clotting disorder (APLA test). Uncontrolled diabetes or hypothyroidism too can cause miscarriages. A detailed ultrasound to identify any abnormalities in the uterus like polyp, septum or a small fibroid in the cavity.

Once, we have ruled out any major cause, we advise you to come immediately to us once you are pregnant.

You will be started on some progesterone’s which helps to keep your pregnancy safe. They may be given vaginally or as injections.

It is advisable to reduce the fast pace of your life and take precautions.

You may require frequent monitoring by ultrasound to see how your baby is doing.

More importantly, you will be well supported and be again and again reassured. Once you cross the first three months of pregnancy, both you and us are relieved and very hopeful.

Being positive, having faith, reducing anxiety and stress, being in touch with your obstetrician and sincerely following her advice is the only way forward.

Recurrent miscarriage only occurs in 1% of couples and 70% of these pregnancies have a very good outcome. Be assured, in experienced hands, you will the fortunate one.
