How To Boost Computer Performance For Games And Applications

One of the most frustrating things that we, tech users, can experience is lag or stutters in our devices. It draws away from the immersive nature of the games we play or the programs we use, and it adds up to a very bad user experience. Although lag or stutters are typically caused by internet connectivity issues, it is sometimes our own devices that have caused these problems. It could be that our devices are running on obsolete hardware that is unable to keep up with the demands of modern apps. In this case, it would be wise to upgrade to more powerful options.

However, there are also cases where these lags and stutters are caused by bottlenecks, specifically in storage. What we mean by this is that, because our computer’s storage device is full in capacity, it would have to clear and replace files along the way. This bogs down the entire system, and its effects will be clear and noticeable. In this article, we are going to talk about the things you can do to boost PC performance. This will include overclocking, clearing cache, and compressing files, and we’re even going to teach you how to wipe a PC.

Overclocking

If you are even a little bit exposed to the tech world, you may have come across the term “overclocking.” Essentially, this refers to the process of programming specific computer components to run faster in hopes of gaining performance benefits. In other words, it aims to make computer parts run beyond their normal capacities. In effect, this raises the temperature, and it could also cause premature wear and tear.

Thus, in overclocking different PC components, be sure to have adequate cooling. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of guides available online when it comes to overclocking, and we recommend you check out some of them if you are interested in this procedure. Understand, however, that overclocking is a major modification procedure, which means that you effectively void any warranty attached to your devices or components. Approach this procedure with caution.

Clear cache

A cache is your computer’s way of remembering things. Basically, it refers to files that are pre-opened and are left running in the background so that when you open a particular program or app, it does so in a shorter amount of time. However, these files can quickly add up to your computer’s storage drives. In some cases, your computer will even keep a cache for those programs that you rarely open. This can overload your storage devices and make your computer run slower because of multiple background processes. You can use third-party cleaner apps to clear cache and other temporary data to see a noticeable effect on your computer’s performance.

Compressing files

Another way to speed up your device is through file compression. This is very much self-explanatory. In this procedure, specially-programmed software will run through your data and see which files can be compressed. This is especially relevant for photos, videos, audio files, and text. Compressing files is also a great option to gain more storage space. This is quite helpful if you’re running a device with limited storage, such as a solid-state drive (SSD). Upon clearing storage space, your computer can now effectively write new data into the free space, and it won’t have to clear and overlap data anymore. This could potentially speed up your computer’s processes.

Wiping your drives

Finally, you may also opt to completely wipe your device. This is often the last resort if all other alternatives fail. In a complete wipe, you basically restore your device to its brand-new state, at least in terms of software. From here, you can use it more strategically to avoid racking up data. Cleaning a Windows drive is not too difficult. For Windows 10, go to Settings, choose System, Update & Security, and then Recovery. Here, click “Reset this PC,” then proceed to choose “Reset.” The wiping procedure will begin after you click to reset. Once done, you now have a fresh version of Windows ready for use.
