Indian Naan Bread Recipe

  1. Place 1 teaspoon of yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1/4 cup of warm water in a bowl.
  2. Stir the ingredients together and let them sit for about 5 minutes or until the mixture becomes frothy.
  3. In a separate large bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder together.
  4. Add 1/4 cup of yogurt, 2 tablespoons of oil, and the yeast mixture to the large bowl of flour. Stir well to combine all ingredients until the dough becomes soft and sticky.
  5. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 2 hours or until it becomes double in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to its highest setting and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to warm up.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 portions. Roll each of the dough balls into a teardrop shape or circular shape, to a thickness of ¼ inch or less.
  8. Brush the surface of each naan bread with melted butter or oil and sprinkle with some nigella seeds or other toppings of your liking.
  9. Place the naan bread on the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet and bake for about 3-4 minutes or until the bread blisters and becomes golden brown on top.
  10. Take out the naan bread using a spatula and place them on a cooling rack or serve hot with your favorite Indian curry dish.
