Cars of the Future: Taking Design to A Whole New Level

Concept cars are a dreamlike vision of what automakers plan to integrate into their production models in years to come. Often seen at major car shows like the Tokyo Motor Show and the North American International Auto Show, they are created to impress consumers and gauge their reaction to new technology and aesthetics. Only a few actual models of each car are produced, though their influence is seen throughout a manufacturer’s output for years to come.

Because they are futuristic by nature, concept cars often showcase some of the most cutting edge designs to create a window into the future built off of the best elements of the past. The most memorable concept cars mesh forward-thinking aesthetics with innovative technologies to create timeless vehicles that are not just stunning to behold; they alter the driving experience at its core to create something altogether new. Check out our list of some of the most innovative and jaw-dropping concept cars ever created:

Bugatti Aerolithe

One of the first concept cars ever created, the Bugatti Aerolithe still inspires double takes over eighty years after its unveiling in 1935. Designed by Jean Bugatti, son of the company’s founder Ettore Bugatti, the car was one of the fastest of its time and featured body panels made of a new “Elektron” magnesium alloy. The material was extremely flammable and difficult to weld, so the design embraced external rivets which became a trademark aspect of the car’s unconventional and showy design.

Mazda Vision Coupe

Awarded 2018 Concept Car of the Year by Car Design Night, the Mazda Vision Coupe represents the newest phase of Mazda’s KODO-Soul of Motion design language, in which “the expression of vitality and dynamism has evolved in pursuit of an essential Japanese aesthetic.” Unveiled in Tokyo in 2017, the four-door coupe features a minimal, flowing design that eschews bells and whistles for a sleek silhouette similar to the red RX-Vision concept car shown two years ago at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Cadillac Escala

Spanish for “scale,” the Cadillac Escala combines eloquent vertical lighting, a daring grille and a traditional coupe contour to exhibit its “over luxury, covert technology” approach to futuristic artistry. Cashmere, brushed aluminium and hand-sewn leather combine to create an inviting, lush interior while advanced hands-free driving technology and the new trademark “Flying Goddess” rotary knobs combine a vision of what is to come with the most evocative elements of their past designs.

Renault Symbioz

Autonomous cars are rated on a scale from zero to five: zero meaning they have no automation, and five meaning that they can navigate situations on the road at the same level as a human. The class four autonomous Renault Symbioz is inspired by bringing feelings of home to the road: essentially acting as a luxurious living room on wheels. Meant to show how an autonomous vehicle may change people’s lives in a few decades, the Symbioz is a stunning example of disrupting the experience of driving through the deft combination of forthcoming technology and elegant design.

Citroen GT

A collaboration between French car manufacturer Citroen and Polyphony Digital, the studio responsible for the popular Gran Turismo video games, the Citroen GT was unveiled in 2008 to coincide with the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The two-seater, mid engine coupe features the Ford Modular V8 petrol/gasoline engine delivering a whopping 646hp. The flowing lines and pearlescent shape paired with a wide air intake, blue LEDs and floating carbon rear view mirrors make it an unmistakable design that bridges the digital world and reality.

Mercedes SLK Aphelios

Inspired by the body of Macedonia’s Ohrid Trout, there’s definitely something fishy about the sleek Mercedes SLK Aphelios designed by Apostol Tnokovski. While most designers follow the great inventors like Leonardo da Vinci and look to birds and other animals for inspiration, fish are not often a source of innovation for concept cars. From the matte silver coloring to the long, sleek window that runs from the front of the car to the back to give the driver a panoramic view of the outside world, the SLK Aphelios is an intriguing mixture of subtle and bold design choices that add up to a fantastic look.

Honda NeuV

The Honda NeuV (pronounced “new-v”) shows the next step in urban electric cars from one of the most celebrated manufacturers of alternative fuel vehicles. The main design conceit is that most cars sit idle when not in use - the NeuV instead operates as a ride-sharing vehicle providing transportation to others with a driverless feature as well as selling excess energy generated by the car back to the power grid. By monetizing the vehicle’s downtime, the company hopes to create an alternative business model for customers in busy urban areas. The NeuV also features a headerless windshield with a sensational curved shape that offers unrivaled visibility and maneuverability.
